National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America (NOSLINA) NOSLINA was launched as a nonprofit organization about 12 years ago in Washington DC when Sierra Leoneans and their friends/supporters came together to pool their resources to help campaign for an end to the brutal civil war, to restore democracy, and to promote sustainable development. Since that time, we have lobbied Congress to support the return of democracy, we have launched scholarships for needy children, we have pushed for Dual Citizenship for Sierra Leoneans so that they can be better positioned to help their country of origin, we have conducted public communication campaigns for peaceful conduct of elections, we have donated medical journals to the University of Sierra Leone, and recently we donated large community dumpsters to help reduce urban blithe and improve sanitation in Freetown.
We are actively working to initiate community health projects to reduce incidents of malaria, lassa fever, and improve maternal and child health. We have donated funds toward the Arc of Sierra Leone, a non-profit organization whose mission is to build a hospital in the capital city of Freetown; to the Gondobay Manga Foundation (Isaiah Washington’s foundation) for the building of secondary schools in the provinces of Sierra Leone; and to several Sierra Leone organizations in the United States to attain their organizations’ goals (such as the Ms Sierra Leone DC Beauty Pageant that helps to support women empowerment both in the U.S.A. and in Sierra Leone).
Our members are drawn from a broad spectrum of the Sierra Leonean Diaspora in North America and their friends. They are motivated by the common ideal of helping to rebuild their homeland utilizing the insight and special opportunities of living in the United States to help forge a better future for their people and country. Many in our organization have answered the call of leadership and returned home to make meaningful contributions such as Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, Former Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Deputy Minister of Education to identify a few. These and other NOSLINA members see it as their sacred trust to help make Sierra Leone a better place: peaceful, stable, entrepreneurial, healthy, and educated with a value for human rights and dignity of the individual.
